On the third of October I woke before light, in my mother's house, in my own bed.
It was the wide bed now, in the front room upstairs.
We had carried the narrow one down to the sewing room in March, for guests.
Alister slept on his stomach with one arm over my pillow and his mouth open.
He had worked a double on Thursday and been up at four with a chimney fire.
He did not stir when I slid out from under his hand.
I put on his CHIEF jacket over my nightgown and went down in my socks.
The kitchen was cold. The calendar by the phone had been turned to October, in my hand.
I had been the Washington County court reporter since the first of January.
The apartment on Damen was gone.
Aunt Verna had stepped down as treasurer in November.
She had moved to her late husband's cousin's in Zanesville, and she sent a Christmas card with her name signed and nothing else.
