Chapter 11: The Video
"Who knew we were there?" Micah asked.
We were sitting on the edge of the motel bed, both of us half dressed, staring at my phone.
"The realtor," I said. "And whoever she called."
"Who would she call?"
"The owner. To tell her some strange newlyweds were very interested in her dusty shed."
He swore softly.
"Eleanor's in California."
"Eleanor has a phone. And a lot of fans in this valley."
I opened my laptop on the green quilt and backed up every photo three times.
Cloud, hard drive, and an email to my old professor with the subject line: DO NOT DELETE, EVER.
Micah watched me do it.
"I love that you're paranoid," he said.
"I'm not paranoid. I'm a scientist."
"Same thing with better funding."
I almost smiled.
Then my phone started buzzing and didn't stop.
Texts. Missed calls. A message from Posy in all capital letters.
LEN DON'T LOOK AT THE INTERNET.
So of course I looked.
Eleanor had posted a video at midnight, Pacific time.
She sat in a hospital corridor in a gray sweater with no makeup on, her eyes swollen.
"I don't usually talk about my private life," she said into the camera. "But my husband is in the hospital tonight, and I can't stay quiet."
She took a shaking breath.
"Seven years ago, a woman walked out on him without a word. It nearly broke him. Last week she came back. She went into his room in the middle of the night with her chemicals. And now he's lying in there and the doctors are talking about arsenic."
She wiped her eyes.
"I'm not saying what happened. I'm just asking you to pray for him. And to pray for our son."
The video had two million views.
Under it, the comments were already doing the rest of her work.
