Chapter 35: Not Tonight

I didn't read a single message.

That felt important, for reasons I couldn't have explained.

Micah came down the stairs with his face in pieces.

"She won't answer," he said. "She's in there. I can hear her breathing."

I turned the laptop around so he could see the screen.

He read the one name at the top, and the heart beside it.

He read it for a long time.

"Is she hurt?"

"She says she's fine." He laughed, a terrible sound. "She says she's fine."

He turned for the hall closet, where we kept the toolbox.

"What are you doing?"

"The hinges. It's a hollow-core door. I can have it off in four minutes."

"Micah."

"Four minutes, Len."

I stood between him and the closet, with my belly in front of me.

"No," I said.

"She's been talking to her, Len. To Jackie."

"To the woman who walked out on her, and sat across the aisle today and smiled at us."

"I know."

"I'm her father."

"I know that too. If you take that door off, she'll never open another one for you."

He stared at me.

Then his whole body let go.

"What do I do?" he said, quietly.

"We sit," I said. "We don't ask. We just stay."

It took me some time to get down onto the hall floor.

Micah did it for me.

We sat with our backs against the wall across from her door and our legs stretched out on the carpet.
