Chapter 47: Home
"No," Posy said again, to the whole courtroom, and her voice did not shake.
"I don't want to hear it. I'm never going to want to hear it."
The judge looked at her over his glasses for a long moment.
"The request is denied," he said gently. "Ms. Boutwell, sit down."
Jacqueline sat.
Posy sat too, and put her head on my shoulder, and that was all.
On Saturday night, my mother stood in our front hall with her garment bag and a bowl of potato salad.
She announced that she was keeping the baby until six in the morning.
"She eats at two," I said. "There's milk in the freezer. Third shelf, in the labeled bags."
"I fed you on a schedule, Lenora. I know how a bottle works."
"She hates the green blanket."
"Then she and I will have a talk about the green blanket."
Posy was at her best friend's house, with a typed itinerary.
She had left a note on the refrigerator in purple pen.
DO NOT COME HOME. THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. SIGNED, THE HEAD OF EVERYTHING.
The door of our bedroom closed.
Micah stood with his back against it, in his flannel shirt.
"Okay," he said. "We have seven hours."
"We have until two, or until she screams, whichever is first."
"That's what happened last time."
"I know it's what happened last time."
The doctor had cleared us at six weeks.
It was week ten and a half, and we had tried twice.
The first time, the baby had begun to wail at the exact moment he'd taken off my shirt.
The second time, he had fallen asleep with his mouth on my shoulder.
I had let him, because I had been asleep too.
"I made a list," Micah said.
"No."
"It's a short list."
"Callicott."
"One, kiss you until the room goes away. Two..."
I crossed the carpet and kissed him before he could reach two.
He made a sound against my mouth.
His hands came up and held my face, and his beard scratched my chin.
