Chapter 5: The Wager

Ashfall's tent stood at the far edge of the camp field, as far from the Blackpine pavilion as the Warden's map allowed.

I was alone in it that night, sitting on a camp cot with my boots off, when the canvas flap lifted without a knock.

I knew who it was before I looked up.

My wolf had known the second he left the pavilion.

Ronan ducked inside and let the flap fall shut behind him.

He was still in the clothes he had worn to the Hunt, a gray shirt torn at the shoulder and dark trousers stiff with dried mud.

His right hand was wrapped in a bloody strip of linen.

"Get out," I said.

"Give me one minute."

"The Truce says I can't hit you. It doesn't say I have to let you sit down."

He didn't sit.

He stood just inside the flap with his back against the tent pole, and the lamp threw his shadow high up the wall.

"I came to ask you something," he said. "And I'll go if you tell me to."

I looked at the linen on his hand.

Blood had soaked through the cloth and was starting to drip from his fingers onto the grass floor.

"What did you do to that?"

"After the Hunt." He glanced at it as if he had forgotten it. "There's a stone wall behind our pavilion. I put my claws in it."

"Why?"

"Because they wouldn't go back in."

He held up the hand.

I watched the bandage twitch.

Under the linen, black claws were pushing out through the fingertips, and the whole hand was trembling with the effort of pulling them in.

"It's been like this three years," he said, quietly. "My wolf doesn't listen to me anymore. I can't hold a full shift for more than an hour. I haven't been able to run the way I used to since the night of the Feast."
