Chapter 16: Go to Bed, Rowena

I did not stop to think.

I ran out the kitchen door, tore off my jacket on the lawn, and shifted before it hit the ground.

My russet wolf hit the grass already running.

Behind me came a heavy black shape, and I knew it was Ewan.

Behind him came grey, and I knew that was Garrick, with his Beta on his heels.

Lorna had left her scent all over the herb garden.

It was lavender and clean linen and something else, something sharp and sweet that I should have known.

I followed it down through the garden, across the paddock, and onto the old logging road that led to the border.

The sky was a deep purple and the first stars were out.

She was fast for a human.

She had a head start, and she knew the trees.

But a wolf runs down a woman in the dark, and I was angrier than I had ever been in my life.

The road dropped to the creek where it ran narrow and loud over black rocks.

At the bottom was a wooden footbridge, the one old people used to cross to Brindle Creek before the treaty closed it.

Lorna was on the middle of it, bent double, panting.

She had her medicine bag clutched against her chest.

I came out of the trees and shifted back on the planks, naked and furious.

"Stay where you are," I said.

She jumped and spun around.

Ewan padded onto the bridge behind me and stood at my shoulder, a huge black wolf with his lip curled.

Garrick came out of the dark on the other end, and the Beta stopped behind him.
