Chapter 18: Three Days and Four

I knelt on the wet stones, so my face was level with his.

Both packs watched.

I did not care.

"Yes," I said. "It's true."

His chin shook.

"I'm not going to lie to you, Jory. Not ever again."

"Why?"

"You heard me at the stones. I took a root so I wouldn't hurt." I swallowed. "Here is what I never got to tell you. It didn't work on you. The first thing that came back was a tooth in an apple, and a boy holding it up with a gap in his grin."

His mouth wobbled.

"That was me?"

"That was you."

"It didn't hurt me less," he said. "You forgetting."

"I know."

"I waited at the window," he said, and the tears came now, fast and furious. "Every single night. I thought you left because I was sick. I thought I coughed too much."

My heart broke on the spot.

"No," I said. "No, baby. Never. You were the best thing I ever did."

"Then why did you forget me?"

"Because I was a coward," I said. "And I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

He stared at me with his father's grey eyes.

He hit my shoulder once with his small fist.

Then he fell into my arms, and he held on so hard that it hurt.

Behind us, I heard a woman crying in the Ironwood line.

I heard a man blow his nose.

I held Jory until his shaking stopped, and I didn't look at anyone.

"I don't want to live in the big house," he said into my collar. "I don't want the big bed. I want to live here."

"Jory," Garrick said, and his voice cracked in the middle.

"And I want to live with you, too, Father." Jory turned his wet face. "I want both. I don't want to choose."
