Chapter 23: Where Everyone Can See

Ewan's POV

I had stood on that porch since dawn, and I had never been more afraid in my life.

My whole pack stood on the lawn.

I had called them myself before sunrise, and sixty wolves came out of their cabins in their coats with their breath smoking.

They did not know why.

I held the burlap sack against my chest.

It weighed eleven pounds.

I knew, because I had weighed it, once, on Nan's scale, and told myself it was a kindness.

"I have something to tell you," I said.

My voice came out rough.

"Say it loud, Alpha," an old man called, and a few wolves laughed, nervously.

I did not laugh.

"A year ago, a woman came across our creek with her back torn open," I said. "I found her. She was in terrible pain, and she asked me for a thing, and I gave it to her."

Not a sound on the lawn.

"I put the root in her cup, and after the first season I kept putting it in." I made myself keep looking at them. "You heard the rest across the creek. Now you hear the part that is mine."

A woman gasped.

"I'm your Alpha, and I broke my oath to the one person in this pack I loved most. So my seat goes to a vote at the next full moon. Any wolf here can stand against me."

I heard Nan on the steps behind me, very quietly, begin to cry.

"Alpha," said the old man softly.

"I'm not asking for anything."

"Sit down, Ewan," the old man said, and half the lawn laughed through tears. "We'll vote after the wedding, and you'll lose."

I lifted the sack.

There was a fire already burning in the iron barrel at the foot of the steps.
