Chapter 19: The Voice That Failed
"Accepted," Darian said.
I grabbed his sleeve.
"Darian, he's fifty-five years of fighting, and you haven't slept."
"I know."
"Don't do it."
"He called it in front of both packs." His eyes were already lightening toward amber. "If I refuse, I'm not the Alpha, and Joan goes back to Redfall's cellar by morning."
He took my face in both hands.
"I need you to stay out of the ring, Cal. Whatever happens. If you come in, he'll say I needed a human to fight for me, and they'll believe him."
"I hate that."
"I know."
"If you die, I'll never forgive you."
"Noted." He kissed my forehead in front of both packs, quickly, and let go.
Joan took my arm, and held on.
The oldest elder lifted a hand, and the torch ring drew back into a wider circle.
"A challenge for the pack," he said. "To yielding, or to the ground. No weapons. No aid. Begin."
Darian and Dunstan stripped off their shirts and their boots at the edge of the flattened grass.
Then the air around them went wavy, and bones cracked.
I had seen Darian shift a hundred times, and I had never watched it afraid.
He became a tall black wolf with grey-green eyes.
Dunstan became a huge dun-colored one with silver across his muzzle, and he was bigger.
I hadn't known an Alpha could be that big.
They circled.
Dunstan struck first.
He came in low and hit Darian at the shoulder.
The two bodies went over together in a rolling snarl that I felt in my teeth.
Darian came up with blood on his flank.
