Chapter 23: Asked
We sat at the kitchen table with the lemon cake between us and ate it with two forks.
It was a very good cake.
Darian watched me eat the first bite.
"Well?" he said.
"Joan's made it better."
"She puts more lemon in than she used to."
"Darian."
"Yes."
"You said you'd ask."
He put his fork down and wiped his hands on a dish towel, carefully, one finger at a time.
Then he took the towel away and put both his hands flat on the table, palms up, an inch from mine.
He didn't take hold.
"Calla Pellam," he said, "I'm in love with you. I have been since the day you came into my kitchen in a green dress. Not because of a wolf or a bond or a bottle. I'd have loved you if you'd been a girl from the next street who never heard of any of it."
My throat closed.
"I want you at my table, and in my bed, and in the chair next to mine if you want the chair. I want to hand you things. I want to hand you everything." His mouth twisted. "You can say no. I'll still be in this kitchen in the morning. I'll still put the salt next to your plate."
"You'd better hand it to me," I said.
His breath stopped.
"Yes," I said. "To all of it. Yes."
I put my hands in his.
For a second neither of us moved.
Then he stood and pulled me up out of the chair and into his arms.
I climbed him, with my arms around his neck and my mouth against his.
He laughed into my kiss, and the cake fork rang on the floor.
"Upstairs," I said.
"Joan's asleep next door."
"Then be quiet."
"I can try."
He carried me up the back stairs, and I bit his ear the whole way.
He kicked the bedroom door shut behind us and set me on my feet beside the bed.
The curtains were open on the black ridge and the stars.
For one breath we only stood there, looking.
"This time," I said, "I want to set the pace."
"Is that right?"
