Chapter 7: What Delaney Felt
Joan's bed was empty and made up with fresh sheets.
The window was shut.
On the nightstand, where the tray had been, stood a vase of white roses.
I stood in the doorway with Mack's folded results in my fist and thought that I had been gone six hours.
"Where is she?" I said.
Darian stood behind me in the hall with his bandaged hand held against his chest.
He looked grey.
"They took her at dawn," he said. "Dunstan's healer and four of his wolves. I was asleep."
"You were asleep while four men carried your aunt out of your house?"
"I was on the floor of my study." His voice cracked. "I woke up with the sun in my face and a note under my hand with my own signature. It says I agreed. I don't remember writing it."
"Do you remember anything from last night?"
"The hall. The toast." He rubbed his temple. "Then I woke up on the floor."
I wanted to scream.
Instead I walked past him and down the stairs, because there was one other person in this house who might still be afraid.
Delaney was in the kitchen.
She sat at the long counter with her hair tied back, peeling an apple with a knife that was far too sharp for her shaking hands.
She looked up when I came in, and then she looked at my hands.
The welts had gone down to pink patches.
"You're back," she said. "Darian said you wouldn't be."
"Darian says a lot of things."
I put Mack's paper on the counter and turned it toward her.
"This came from a lab in Harlow Creek. It's wolfsbane. It's in Joan's blood and it's in the rosewater you wear."
She didn't pick it up.
"That's not possible," she said. "It's a bridal oil. My father had it blended for me at home. It's meant to carry my scent to my mate, so that he knows me the moment he's close."
