Chapter 11: The Seal

The yard went quiet.

The young man's hand tightened on my shoulder.

"Search her," Halvard said again. "If she has nothing, I'll apologize on my knees."

Dain stepped up beside me.

"No one searches her," he said. "She is my mate. I forbid it."

He said it as the Alpha King, in front of two hundred wolves.

It was also the first thing he had said for me.

My chest went tight.

"Dain," I said, without looking at him. "Don't."

"Wynn, I only meant"

"You gave me your word."

He stopped.

I saw him understand what he had done.

I turned back to the steps.

"Nobody needs to search me," I said. "I have it."

A noise went through the crowd.

I put my hand inside my dress and pulled out the brown roll.

I had carried it against my skin for four days, and it was warm and soft at the folds.

Halvard's face went through three expressions and settled on triumph.

"There," he said. "You see, she admits it."

"I admit it."

I held the roll up so everyone could see.

"I took it from the cellar, from the box you told me to guard for eight years."

"A thief," Halvard began.

"This is the original war roll of the Hollowmere raid, in the old elder's hand.

"It lists twenty-one children who were taken from Hollowmere."

I looked down at the three of them on the step below me.

"Those are three of them. Standing right here."

Nobody spoke.

"The eleventh is mine," I said. "I'm Wynn Bramley. I was taken from Hollowmere when I was twelve and put in a cellar."
