Chapter 15: The Ring

"The pack doesn't accept the ruling," the beta said again, louder, and turned to face the column.

Nobody answered him.

Half of them were still looking at the stone.

"Brynn Flannery is the Moon's chosen Luna," he said. "A grey rock and an old woman can't change that."

"The stone showed you nineteen calls," Dane said from beside me. "We all saw it written on your face, too."

The beta ignored him.

"And the Alpha stood in our hall and confessed to forging his own bond. Who here still wants to follow a man like that?"

The second elder rose slowly from the boulder where she'd been sitting.

"Forging a bond is an old crime," she said. "The law is plain. An Alpha who makes a false mate forfeits the seat."

I saw Lorcan's shoulders go back.

He had known that.

He had known it when he rang the bell, and he had said every word anyway.

"Then the seat is open," Lorcan said to the beta, "and you want it. Say so to the pack."

He stepped over the line.

He crossed onto the Ironwood bank in front of both packs, and nobody stopped him.

He walked past Dane without looking at him and stopped four feet from me.

My hands were cold.

I felt his heart through the thread, slow and heavy, no fear in it at all.
