"With my money."
"With your money," Brooke said.
I laughed.
I didn't mean to. It just came out, one short ugly sound.
"Does Dexter know she's not sick?"
Brooke shook her head.
"I don't think so. He sleeps in a chair by her bed when she says her chest hurts. Nobody fakes that well."
"Susan does."
She flinched.
"Addie, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I kept telling myself it was one day at a time and nobody was getting hurt."
"I spent two years of Sundays in that house."
"I know."
"You texted me 'miss you' from the top of that mountain."
"I know."
"Go home, Brooke."
She put the wine down on the hallway floor and went.
My coworker picked it up.
"I'm keeping this," she said. "Emotional damages."
The commissary in Georgetown was a long white room with six steel tables and a radio nobody could turn off.
I rented it Thursday nights, after the barbecue guys went home.
Ren started coming by after his shifts.
He said it was for the leftovers.
He ate one egg tart in two bites and then sat on a milk crate and watched me work for three hours.
