Chapter 13: The Cake Has a Message
"Okay," I said.
Phoebe tilted her head.
"Okay?"
"I'll serve the cake."
She smiled.
"Good girl," she said.
It was what Susan used to say to me over the steamer.
She walked out and let the door bang.
Ren turned to me.
"You're not getting food poisoning."
"No."
"And you're not standing at the back."
"No." I picked up the half-eaten tart and dropped it in the bin. "But she needs to think I am."
Then I called Brooke.
She picked up on the first ring.
"Addie?"
"Who's doing the decor for the gala?"
There was a long silence.
"Me," Brooke said. "Susan asked me in September. Before everything."
"Are you still doing it?"
"I was going to quit."
"Don't," I said. "Who runs the screen?"
The Alder ballroom looked like the inside of a pearl.
Brooke had hung white silk from the ceiling and filled every table with white roses and candles in glass.
At the front there was a low stage and a screen as wide as a bus.
