Chapter 31: Teeth
The new orthodontist was a small, brisk woman with reading glasses and no billboards at all.
She didn't call me "our star."
She didn't pinch my chin.
She tipped my chair back and said, "Twenty minutes. It'll feel strange. Then it'll feel like your own mouth."
It took twenty-six.
There was a lot of tiny pliers snapping wire, and then a polisher that buzzed in my back teeth.
Then the assistant handed me a mirror.
I didn't look right away.
I'd had wire across my teeth for almost a year.
I'd had it at my mother's wedding, and in game 42, and on live television with gold confetti stuck to it.
I'd had it every time he kissed me.
"Go on," the orthodontist said. "They're yours."
I looked.
My teeth were straight.
Not Hal straight. Not veneers and billboard white.
Just mine, straight, with one slightly crooked eyetooth she'd said we could leave alone if I liked it.
I liked it.
I smiled at the mirror, with all of them, and the whole freckled face smiled back, and I started laughing for no reason at all.
