Chapter 4: Keys

"Where does he go in March?" I asked Brendan, in front of everyone.

He had Gianna's face against his chest and his hand on her hair.

He did not answer me.

His whole body went still, and he looked at the floor.

"Not here," he said.

Then he walked her out through the side door with Carla behind them, and a hundred and forty guests watched my fiance leave his own wedding with another woman.

It was not a denial.

I noticed that, and I put it away to look at later.

The next morning my father, Clive and I stood outside my apartment door in Brooklyn with a roll of flattened boxes.

The lease was in my name only.

I had signed it two years ago, before Brendan moved in, and he had been paying half the rent ever since.

I knocked once and then used my key.

The door was already unlocked.

Coffee was brewing.

Gianna stood in my kitchen in my gray robe, with her hair twisted up and a mug in her hands.

"Oh, Justine," she said. "You're here. Good."

She set the mug down and came toward me with her face open and soft.

"I didn't know where else to go last night. Brendan said I could stay here, just until my parents' hotel had a room."

"I'm so sorry about yesterday. That post was a terrible, stupid thing to write, and I wish I could take it back."
