Chapter 12: The Right Name
I dressed in a hurry in yesterday's clothes and went down the back stairs, so nobody would see me come out of his room.
Everybody saw me come out of his room.
The cook was at the bottom of the stairs with a tray.
She looked at my hair, and my neck, and my face.
She handed me a cup of coffee and said, "Well. Finally. Drink that, you look like a ghost."
The great room was filling up.
Langtry wolves pulled on jackets as they came in from the yard.
The Silver Moon nine stood together by the window, the twins holding up Mags between them.
She was gray in the face and on crutches she plainly hated, and she'd refused the wheelchair in language that made the healer leave the room.
"You should be in bed," I said.
"So should you," Mags said. "Alone, I'd have thought."
"Mags."
"I'm only saying. These walls are thin, Your Highness."
The twins studied the ceiling.
Clover came down the stairs in her nightgown, dragging Mister Buttons, and climbed straight into my arms without asking.
Arlo came behind her, with his shoes on the wrong feet.
"Who are those people?" he whispered.
"Council riders."
"Are they bad?"
"They're just the mail," I said. "Very fancy mail."
Three riders in long gray coats came in out of the morning.
The lead one was a thin older woman with a silver crest on her collar and a scroll case under her arm.
Aldric stood at the hearth to receive them.
He'd put on a black shirt and buttoned it over the bandage, and his face was unreadable.
He didn't look at me.
I understood that.
I didn't look at him either.
The rider unrolled the scroll.
"From the Lycan Council, to every Alpha of the continent," she read. "On the night of the Hunter's Moon, fifteen days from this one, the Moon Court will sit to crown the heir of the Silver Moon."
A murmur went around the room.
