Chapter 21: Kneel
The speaker lifted the circlet over my head.
I held up my hand.
"Wait," I said.
She waited.
The whole hill waited.
I took my mother's moonstone off its old leather cord.
It lit blue the second it touched my palm, brighter than I'd ever seen it, so bright the Alphas nearest me squinted.
"This one," I said. "Not a new one. Hers."
The speaker looked at the stone for a long moment.
Then she set the circlet down on the bench, worked the blue-white stone out of its setting with her thumbnail, and pressed my mother's into its place.
She put it on my head.
It was lighter than I'd thought it would be.
It sat on my braid.
"Queen of the Silver Moon," the speaker said.
She stepped back.
She went down on one knee herself, first of anyone.
Then the old Alpha with the cane went down again, the one who'd tried too early.
This time nobody stopped him.
"Your Majesty," he said, and his voice broke.
Then the next.
It went round the ring of stones.
Alpha after Alpha, in their good coats, from the coasts and the deserts and the northern ice.
Men who'd stood at dinners while I held a toddler against the wall.
Men who'd handed me their empty glasses.
One of them, a big red-faced Alpha from the plains, had once snapped his fingers at me for a napkin.
He knelt in the dirt and didn't meet my eyes.
I let him not meet them.
The Mossgrave seconds knelt too, in their gray, with their heads down.
Their Alpha was in silver chains at the edge of the ring.
