Francesca didn't stand up.
She sat with her hands in her lap and looked at the faces turned toward her.
"Not here," she said. "Not at a party, with the band waiting."
"My father wanted the table to hear him. Not a hall." She looked at the port captain. "Ask me upstairs. At the table. With the door open."
The port captain nodded once.
"Then eat," he said to the room. "Benedetto paid for the pork."
The band started again, too fast, and the waiters came out of the kitchen with the platters.
The table sat on the fifteenth of December.
The stairs above the restaurant were the same narrow stairs, but six of the photographs were gone.
Pale squares on the wallpaper showed where Ottavio Abate had stood in his hat beside her father.
He was in the jail on Nashua Street, without bail.
Claudia was out on bail, in a rented condo in Quincy with their mother, waiting for her forgery hearing in January.
The wooden door stood open.
The five captains were at the green felt.
The six elders sat at the far end, quieter than she had ever seen them.
The chair at the head was empty.
Michael was standing at the window with his back to the snow.
