Chapter 14: Not the Bond
Fenella's ambulance came across the Thirty-First Street Bridge with the lights going and no siren.
She jumped down with two foil blankets and a look on her face Noel had never seen.
She wrapped him first.
Then she wrapped Fletcher, who was naked, and she didn't even make a joke about it.
"Your core temp's ninety-four," she said. "I'm going to yell at you when it's ninety-seven."
"Fair."
Then she held Noel's face in both hands and pressed her forehead to his, hard, for a long time.
"I have the four minutes," she said finally. "Private stock. Full strength. It's on my phone and in my email and on a flash drive in my sock."
"Your sock?"
"I panicked."
Noel called Maddie from Fenella's phone before anything else.
"Grandpa? Why are you on Fenella's phone?"
"Mine fell in a river. If you get a text from me today, it's not from me."
"What does that mean?"
"It means I love you, and I'll tell you tonight."
By nine that night he'd stopped shaking.
Fletcher had his stitches redone by a paramedic who called him "sir" the whole time in a very mean voice.
