Chapter 16: Two Million Views

Dorinda's POV

By Monday, Pearl's video of the porch had two million views.

I found out because a woman in a red coat was waiting for me at the bottom of the department steps with a man holding a camera.

"Ms. Pauley? I'm a producer on the morning show. We'd love twenty minutes."

I had my bag on my shoulder and Soren's old scarf wound twice around my neck.

"No, thank you."

"We can fly your father in. We can fly your sister."

"My father has a pipe to finish."

She laughed and held out a card.

"The internet is on your side, Dorinda. People are calling you the girl who walked. You could tell it your way."

"I told it my way once," I said. "On a porch. It had two million views before I got my gloves on."

"Then let's make it three."

"I don't want it to be three."

I went around her.

The camera followed me up the steps.

Then a graduate student in a green beanie stepped in front of the lens, said, "Private building," and held the door shut with his back.

I didn't know his name.

He grinned at me over his shoulder as I went through.

Inside, the chair was waiting by the mailboxes with her gray braid over one shoulder and a mug in her hand.

"Pauley," she said. "My office."

My stomach dropped, and I followed her.

She shut the door and put the mug down.

On her desk was a thick envelope with a law firm's name in the corner.

"This went to the board of trustees on Friday," she said. "I got a courtesy copy. I'd like you to read it before someone reads it to you."
