Chapter 15: The Statement

Elliot's POV

Two police officers came through the front doors of the collectors' hall while Merry was still holding the papers.

I took her elbow, and for once I did not ask first.

"Loading dock," I said.

She looked at me, and she didn't pull away.

We went through a curtain, down a corridor of stacked display cases, and out into a service alley where a gray truck sat with its engine running.

Bridget leaned across the cab and shoved the door open.

"Get in. I heard the whole thing on the livestream. Nicely done, little sister."

Merry climbed in between us, and the truck pulled out before the door shut.

Behind us, a voice shouted her name.

Nobody followed.

Bridget's friend from the county records office had a flat above a laundromat on the east side, empty until the end of the month.

It had a mattress, a kettle and two chairs.

Merry sat on the floor with the court papers across her knees and read them twice.

"Any officer can take me," she said. "Colin doesn't even need to find me. He only needs me to be stopped for a taillight."

"Then you don't drive," Bridget said. "And you don't walk anywhere without one of us."

"I'm not hiding for a week."

"You're not hiding. You're staying where it's boring."

Merry laughed, once, and it sounded cracked.

My phone rang in my pocket.

I looked at the screen and my stomach dropped.

The screen said *Colin's father.* He was the man who had signed my license reference six years ago.

I went down the stairs to the street before I answered.

"Elliot," he said. His voice was warm, and had never once been loud. "I think we should talk like adults."

"I'm listening."

"My son has behaved badly. I won't pretend otherwise. But you have behaved worse, and you did it with a controlled substance."
