Chapter 4: Dane Brings Coffee

I typed *I'm safe. Tell no one. Friday, noon, Ninth Street Diner.* and deleted the whole thread.

Then I put Elliot's phone back on the arm of the couch, exactly where it had been.

At nine the next morning, the buzzer went.

Elliot was at the stove with a spatula.

"Don't answer that," he said to me.

It was too late.

The front door was unlocked, because the doorman had waved somebody up.

Dane Doherty walked in, carrying a cardboard tray of coffees.

"Morning, lovebirds!"

He wore a leather jacket and the grin of a man who had never been told no and made it stick.

"Dane," Elliot said. "It's early."

"It's Day Two, buddy. I'm just checking on the merchandise."

He turned his whole body toward me.

I was on the couch in Elliot's spare robe, with my knees tucked under me.

I let my mouth fall open a little.

"Hi," I said. "Have we met?"

"Dane. Colin's friend. You've shaken my hand like four times." He laughed. "God, that never gets old."

He dropped onto the cushion beside me, close enough that our thighs touched.

In my robe pocket, my thumb found the phone.

I had pressed the record button before he came through the door.

"Look at you," Dane said. "Colin wasn't lying. You're gorgeous."

His hand landed on my knee, warm and heavy.

I did not move.

"Dane," Elliot said again.

"What? She doesn't know me. She won't know this, either. Saturday I get her for three days, and she'll be saying honey by Monday."
