Chapter 8: For Sale

Sutton put the phone face down on the motel table.

"They said they wish us the best."

"They said they're a family brand," I said. "I heard them."

He sat on the end of the seashell bed and rubbed his face with both hands.

"It's fine. I've got enough saved for Atlanta. Maybe the race after."

"And then?"

He didn't answer.

That was the answer.

We drove home through the night with the hauler behind us and Reba on the CB, telling the old men which exit had the good biscuits.

I didn't sleep.

I read every comment under Brinley's post.

Eleven thousand of them.

Somewhere past Savannah, I stopped reading and started thinking.

We got to the barn at six in the morning.

The hound came out and leaned on my legs.

I went up to the loft, washed my face, put my hair up and put on a clean Burcham Garage work shirt Daddy had sent with the parts.

Then I went back down to the car.

Sutton was under it already.

"Come out of there," I said. "I need to ask you something."

He rolled out on the creeper and looked up at me.

"I'm going to make a video," I said. "About us. About the part. About all of it. I'm going to post it from here, in front of the car, with my face on it."

"Rule three," he said.

"It's my rule. I can break it."

"Then why are you asking me?"

"Because it's your name too," I said. "And half the say goes both ways."

He lay there on the creeper a long second.

Then he sat up.

"Go on, then," he said. "Use the good light."

Reba held the phone.

The old men stood off to the side and pretended they weren't listening.

I stood in front of the gray #4 with my crooked name under the duct tape, and I looked at the camera.
