Chapter 18: The Toothbrush
I took the stairs of his building two at a time.
Leif was asleep in the third-floor hallway with his back against the wall and his boots stretched across the carpet.
A banana peel lay folded on a napkin beside him.
He woke when I stepped over his legs.
"Is it you?" he mumbled.
"It's me."
"He sent for you?"
"He sent for my toothbrush."
Leif rubbed his face with both hands.
"That's good," he said. "That's a very good sign. That's a toothbrush with intent."
"Go home, Leif."
"I'm not leaving."
"He's going to talk to me," I said. "I think he'd like to do it without your boots in the way."
He thought about that.
Then he got up, groaning, and gripped my shoulder with one huge hand.
"I'm sorry," he said, low. "I was loud, and I was stupid, and I like you."
"I like you too. Go home."
He went down the stairs, quietly, for such a large man.
I turned around.
On the knob of Isak's door hung a clear zip bag with my green toothbrush in it.
Under it hung the bottle of shampoo I'd left in his shower.
A small stack of my things stood neatly on the doormat.
