Chapter 11: What Delilah Would Not Say

I followed her out into the lot.

The wind was coming off the highway, and Delilah stood with her back against her blue hatchback and her arms crossed over her chest.

I stopped three feet away.

"Say it," I said.

"You won't believe me."

"Then I'll be wrong, and you'll have said it."

She looked at the trucks lined up along the fence, and at the sky, and at me.

"He tried to end it in April," she said.

I waited.

"Right after the Easter dinner. You made him a ham and you laughed at something he said, the first time in a year. He came to my place that night and told me it was over. He said you were coming back to him."

"And then?"

"And then I told him I was three months along."

The wind pushed at my coat.

"I held him with it," Delilah said. "I know that's an ugly thing to say. I was scared, and I'd already lost the job at the bakery, and I said if he left I'd walk into your kitchen and tell you everything. So he stayed. He kept paying and he kept coming, and I let him think he had no choice."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you think he picked me. He didn't."

"That doesn't make it better."

"It doesn't," she said. "It makes it true."

I looked for the lie in her face.

I didn't find the whole of it, but I found a piece, small and hard, like a stone in a shoe.

"You said you'd tell me the part you swore you wouldn't."
