Chapter 15: The Coat

On Friday I came in through the kitchen at eleven at night with a pot roast in a cooler bag.

Maude had sent it, along with a note that said "Feed him, you two are thin."

The restaurant had been closed for an hour.

The chairs were up, the line was scrubbed, and the only light came from the pass.

I heard a voice in the dining room before I saw anybody.

It was a woman's voice, low and pleased with itself.

"Daddy's investigator found the incorporation papers in two days," Tabitha was saying. "I can tell you what you're worth to the dollar. Two point one."

I stopped with my hand on the swinging door.

"Billion. Not million. I read the whole file."

I set the cooler down on the steel counter without a sound.

Then I put one eye to the gap.

Ewan stood in the middle of the dining room with his arms at his sides.

Tabitha stood six feet from him in a belted tan trench coat and a pair of red heels.

Her hair was down, her lips were glossy, and her phone was tucked in the coat pocket with the camera lens poking out.

"I don't know what you think you know," Ewan said.

"I know a man with thirty-nine restaurants doesn't need a bride who cleans teeth."

"I know what you need."

She untied the belt.
