The nurse said an hour, so I took it.
I pulled the curtain shut and climbed onto the bed beside him in my coat.
Ewan lay flat in a paper gown that stopped at his knees.
His jaw was clenched, and a vein beat in his temple.
"You're thinking about the number," I said.
"I'm thinking about the room."
"What about it?"
"I've never had a thing go wrong in a kitchen I didn't expect. I don't know what to expect in there."
I took his hand, the one with the old burn across the heel.
"Then tell me what you'll cook when you get out."
"Rosie."
"Humor me. The first thing."
He closed his eyes.
"Eggs," he said. "Soft, with chives. A drop of the sherry vinegar on the jam."
"And?"
"Toast. The bread from the bakery under the lawyer's office. The one that smells like cinnamon."
"And then?"
"And then I sit down," he said slowly, "at my own counter, and you sit across from me, and I eat it with you."
