Chapter 15: Accountability
I climbed the cellar steps with my father calling my name behind me.
Seamus stood at the top with the pen already out of his pocket.
"Well?" he said. "All sorted?"
"I'll be at the dock office Friday."
That was true, and it was all I said.
He took it for a yes.
He patted my arm, and the three captains stepped back to let me through.
The oldest one opened the front door himself.
He looked at my face for a long moment, then at my sweater, and then at nothing.
I walked down the long green lawn to the road and nobody stopped me.
I took a cab to Savin Hill with my hand pressed flat over the phone against my ribs.
I didn't play the recording.
I knew what was on it.
At four that afternoon someone knocked on my mother's door, one soft knock.
I opened it.
Kieran stood on the landing in a black coat with his stitches coming out and his hands empty.
"Niall doesn't know I'm here," he said.
"Come in."
He wouldn't sit.
He stood in the middle of my mother's kitchen, between the stove and the table where I'd done my homework as a girl, and he told me everything in a flat steady voice.
