Chapter 17: The Captains
Niall pulled out his own IV on the third morning.
"Sit down," Orla said.
"No."
"You have a hole in you."
"And my uncle has called the captains to the dock office at noon." Niall swung his legs off the bed, grey to the lips. "To declare me unfit. Twelve captains will hear it."
"So let them hear it from a corpse," Orla said. "Very practical."
"Kit."
I was standing at the window with the green ledger under my arm.
I had taken it from the dock clerk's drawer the night before, and I had read it until my eyes burned.
"Get dressed," I said. "I'm coming with you."
He looked at the book.
Then he looked at me, and for the first time in three days he smiled.
The yard in front of the dock office was packed by eleven-thirty.
Word had gone down the pier.
Three hundred dockhands stood between the containers in their canvas jackets.
