Chapter 20: The Pier
The container hung forty feet above us, turning slowly on its cables.
It was the color of rust, and it was big enough to flatten the whole pier.
"That's a hundred and twenty thousand pounds," Seamus said, in his gentle voice. "It stops over the boy and your father, Mrs. Carrick. I'd like your signature on a paper first."
He held out the pen.
I looked past him at the glass cab at the top of the crane.
A man sat in it with his hand on the lever.
I knew him.
I had seen him in the yard with his hard hat against his chest, the day I read the book.
"One of ours," the foreman murmured behind me. "Four years on that crane."
I didn't raise my voice.
I turned around and spoke to the three hundred men on the pier, and I let it carry.
"He wants me to sign the cut over to him," I said. "He wants me to do it with a load over my father's head. If I do, he's the boss. If I don't, he drops it."
