Mari came to the Bear House at dusk.
She knocked three bright taps, the same as before.
She stood on the step in the pale pink raincoat, with the ribbon still around her neck.
Garvan stood behind me with the skillet.
"He changed the lock," Mari said.
She wasn't smiling.
"I went back to Cottage Four and he'd changed the lock."
"He told me through the shutter that I talk too much."
"You told him where I slept," I said.
"I told him everything."
"That's my job."
She tried a laugh and it broke.
"That was my job."
Her eyes were red, and her ponytail had come loose.
I wanted to feel sorry for her and found I had not been given enough to feel with.
"I have a deal," she said.
"No."
"You haven't heard it."
"I heard you call me a good girl once."
"I'm full."
She took a breath and pushed on.
"Dex has a plan for the bell."
"A real one."
"He won't wait for the seventh sleep."
"He'll ring it when you're least ready."
