Chapter 22: The Gate
We walked out at dawn.
The sky over Honey Hollow had gone from red to a soft, clean pink, and every animal's face had closed up.
The rabbits swept their steps.
The mice hung out the washing.
The badger stood in the bakery door with a tray of rolls, and held one out to each of us as we passed.
"Thank you for your kindness!" he said.
The nurse took a roll.
So did the young man in the gym shirt, and the old man with the glasses, and the woman from the mortgage company.
We walked up Maple Lane in a ragged line, in bathrobes and scrubs and one security jacket.
We passed the well and the bridge and went on toward the north edge of the square.
Grover limped at the front on his bad knee, with his hand on my shoulder.
"I don't believe it," he kept saying.
"Nineteen nights, and I don't believe it."
Garvan walked on my other side.
He had put on his flannel.
His hand was in mine, and every few steps he squeezed it.
