Chapter 13: Why
He did not look away from me.
"Because I needed a wife by Friday," Jonas said.
"Why Friday?"
"Leland had booked a ballroom for Saturday, March 4th."
"Eight hundred guests. An engagement dinner. My name and Delaney's printed on the cards."
I held the hospital statement flat in my hand and said nothing.
"My grandfather's trust passes to a married man," he said. "Leland knew that."
"If I married the woman he picked, I would be married to a vote he already owned."
"He would run my shares through her the day the trust opened."
"You could have refused."
"I refused for a year. He kept the ballroom."
His voice stayed level, which was how I knew it cost him.
"There is one thing my uncle cannot undo, and it is a marriage already filed with the county."
"So you needed a stranger."
"I needed a stranger who could not be bought."
I heard my own laugh, short and ugly.
"Any woman who said yes for money would have sold the marriage to Leland a week later for more," he said.
