On Saturday, December 12th, it snowed on the Southwest Side before the sun came up.
I stood in the bakery's front window with a mug of black coffee and watched the plywood come down.
Two workmen in orange vests lifted the last sheet away, and a clean new pane of glass caught the streetlight.
The awning above it was pink again.
Somebody had painted the single word on it over with white, and then, in my mother's hand, had added a new line in blue.
It said, Rosanna's Bakery. Open for everyone.
"You're staring," Marcy said behind me.
"I'm admiring."
"You're staring like a woman who got everything she wanted and doesn't trust it."
I turned.
She sat on a flour sack in her cardigan.
A cat in a harness rode on her shoulder, because the cat now came to work.
