Chapter 6: Board Brunch

"They're yours," Jonas said on the balcony.

He did not look up.

"I signed them in March of 2023, the day after the clerk's office. I signed new ones every March 3 since."

The papers on the table were stacked in a neat pile.

There were four sets, each in its own clip.

"Why?" I said.

"So that all you had to do was sign and file. You would never wait on me."

He slid the pile across the glass.

I picked up the top set and looked at his name.

It was a clean, exact signature, four years running.

Nobody had ever tried so hard to let me leave.

I sat down in the chair beside him, wearing his shirt, and put the whole stack under my arm.

"I'm not signing these," I said.

"You don't have to decide now."

"I'm deciding now. No."

He turned his head.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked surprised.

"Then we have the brunch," he said, after a moment.

The brunch was at eleven on Friday, in a private dining room at the top of the Thackeray Tower.

Eleven directors sat around a round table with white linen and silver coffee pots.

Leland Thackeray sat at the head in a navy suit, clicking a gold pen.

Delaney stood beside him in white.

The room smelled of lilies and eggs Benedict and cold money.

Jonas pulled out my chair and I sat, and every director watched him do it.

"Colleagues," Leland said pleasantly. "Thank you for coming."
