Chapter 17: Tuesday

On Tuesday afternoon I stood in front of my closet with nothing to wear to a trial.

I own one dress.

I bought it for a cousin's wedding six years ago, and it has a zipper that sticks.

I held it up in the mirror and put it back.

Berit, who had come over at four with a casserole and no questions, watched from my bed.

"Wear what you are," she said.

"A roofer."

"That's the best thing you've got."

So I laid out my cleanest jeans, my good boots, and the brown canvas jacket with HANNE stitched over the pocket.

I tucked the framing hammer into the loop.

Then I sat on the bed and thought about what I would say.

Four sentences.

That was all I trusted myself with.

I was still working on the second one when the doorbell rang.

It was 5:58, and the sun was down, and I was on my feet before Berit could say a word.

Torsten stood on the porch in his dark jacket with his hands at his sides.

He had rung the bell, and he stood there.

"Come in," I said.

He crossed the threshold.

I shut the door behind him and put my back against it.

He stood in my front hall looking at me.
