Chapter 24: First Frost
On the first Tuesday in November, at 5:15 in the afternoon, Torsten stood at the after-care door of Lowell Elementary.
He had Eero's lunch box in his hand.
It was already dark.
The sun had set at a quarter to five, and the whole parking lot lay under lamps and a sky the color of slate.
The teacher came out with a clipboard and stopped.
She looked at the tall man in the flannel jacket, then at her list.
"You must be on the pickup form," she said.
"Hanne put me on Sunday," said Torsten. "Torsten Ruud."
She found the line and read it, and her face softened.
"Oh, you're the clock man."
"I am."
"He talks about you all day."
"I hear about the bridge," Torsten said.
The custodian, who was mopping the hall behind her, glanced up.
It was the same big quiet man from the day I had pulled my son out of story hour.
He gave Torsten one slow nod.
Eero came running out of the classroom with his backpack banging his knees.
"Torsten!"
He did not slow down.
He hit Torsten's legs at full speed and wrapped himself around them, and Torsten stood perfectly still and let it happen.
