Chapter 20: The Magazine Offer
The Truth Table was a long white table on the patio of a restaurant on Sunset.
Heat lamps stood over it, and paper lanterns hung from a wire.
There were thirty places, with cards in gold ink.
Most of the guests were from the magazine or its friends, and every one of them had a phone beside the bread plate.
At the head of the table sat Corin's father, scrubbed and combed, with a napkin tucked into his collar.
Beside him sat a woman in a leather coat with a portfolio, the magazine's features director, whom I had never seen and recognized at once.
She was smiling the exact smile the editor had worn in the garage.
Her gold card at the foot of the table read HEDY DEHAVEN, with a dessert fork beside it.
Marj came in behind me, chewing, and took the chair on my left.
"I'm just furniture," she said. "Pretend I'm a ficus."
Wills sat on my right, in his one jacket, and cracked his healed knuckles under the cloth.
Corin was not at the table.
He had stayed in the truck across the street, with the engine off and the window down, because I had asked him to.
"If you come," I had said, "it's a fight with you in it, and that's the picture they want."
