Chapter 11: The Notebook Aloud

The hearing was held in a paneled room on the third floor of the administration building.

Five people sat behind a long table, and I sat in front of it on a wooden chair that had been designed to make people confess.

The dean was a thin man with a bow tie.

My professor sat on his left, with her three scarves.

At the end of the table a lawyer in a camel overcoat shuffled a folder.

He had been introduced as counsel for "the interested party," which meant Sabrina, and I knew it from his cologne.

Arlen sat at the back, in a charcoal suit, with his hands folded.

He had not been invited to speak, and he had come anyway.

"Ms. Chadwick," the dean said. "The committee has some questions about three photographs."

"I'm in a relationship," I said. "Which of those photographs is the improper part?"

Somebody coughed.

The lawyer rose.

"Mr. Rhodes holds a financial position over this institution and, through her father, over her," he said. "It is the position of my client that this is predatory."

"It's not," I said.

"Mr. Rhodes has been paying your rent and your living expenses since Monday, Ms. Chadwick."

"He hasn't paid for my eggs," I said. "I sold a painting. My professor bought it."

My professor nodded gravely.
