Chapter 26: Albert's Fall

The recording went on, and nobody on that lawn moved.

"He took the wheel," my father's voice said, slurred and huge.

"The boy took it, and I let him, and I went into the river and washed my hands."

A woman in the second row made a small sound.

"I left her breathing, Sabbie. She was looking at me, and I left her."

My father lunged.

He crossed the grass faster than I had seen him move in ten years.

He grabbed for the tablet, and Sabrina held it high with both arms, her veil whipping.

"Cut it!" he said to the wedding planner. "Cut the power!"

The planner looked at the cables, and at the guests.

She folded her arms.

Junie's brother, who had been told nothing and understood everything, stepped in front of the sound table with his cap pushed back.

"That's enough," Sabrina said, and pressed the screen.

The speakers died.

The silence afterward was so enormous I heard the river against the stones.

My father stood in the middle of his own wedding in a navy morning coat.

One hand was still out toward a woman in a wedding dress.

Then he turned to the crowd, and I watched him find his voice, the voice he used on zoning boards.

"A fabrication," he said. "I won't dignify it."
