Chapter 10: The Toast
The dinner was Saturday at seven, for twelve people, and I cooked all of it.
I put on the black dress I had worn to the funeral and took the good plates out of the china cabinet.
It was my husband's idea of a memorial, he said.
A quiet dinner for Kit, with the board and the senior staff, so the people who had loved her could be together.
By seven the dining room was full of candles and hospital people.
There were two board members, the chief of surgery, a cardiologist, and their wives.
Camilla arrived at seven-ten in a green dress and kissed my cheek.
"You look beautiful," she said. "You look strong."
"So do you."
Daniel Westerfield arrived at seven-fifteen, alone, in the gray suit.
He gave me his coat and his condolences.
He did not look at Camilla, and Camilla looked at the hors d'oeuvres.
I thought they must hate each other, and I was glad.
Mitchell had made the seating chart himself.
He put Daniel at my left hand and Camilla directly across from me, and he took the head of the table.
I understood it when we sat down.
He wanted both of them where I could see them, and where he could see all three of us.
The soup came and went.
A board member told a story about Kit's cookies, and everyone laughed, and I laughed too.
Then Mitchell stood and tapped his glass.
"I'd like to say a few words," he said. "I won't be long."
The room went quiet.
"Six years ago a girl of eighteen turned up at my wedding in a borrowed dress, and told me if I hurt her sister she'd bake me a pie with something in it."
