Chapter 25: Midnight
Hades was beside me before I could say anything.
The young Fate let him come this time.
He took my wrist and turned it to the light, and his face went still in a way I'd learned to be afraid of.
"Why is it still there?" I said. "She's done. She's a little old lady. Why is it still moving?"
The middle Fate bent and picked up my folder.
It didn't fight her.
She held it up, and the gold rose out of it, my one line, and rewrote itself in the air.
Same words.
Except for one.
Where every other line had said "which I will not grant", mine said "granted".
"That's a lie," I said. "Danny's thread had no knot. He read it. In the ER."
"On the third of October," the middle Fate said.
She reached into the air over Danny's head.
He flinched and grabbed my arm.
She drew down his thread, long and red-brown, the same color as mine.
Halfway along it, tight and small and shining, was a gold knot.
"No," I said.
Danny stared at it.
"When did she touch you?" Hades said to him.
His voice was very quiet.
