Chapter 28: Jody Wakes

The ferryman picked the oar back up before Hades had even stood.

"Good," he said, to the river.

Then he rowed us the rest of the way across, very slowly, so we'd have time.

The call came three weeks later, at five in the morning, on the second Sunday of December.

It was the night nurse at the Isles.

After Halloween the house had gone to the bank, and the bank hadn't known what to do with nine old people asleep in white beds.

The woman I trained had found a real nurse and put her on Second Shot's tab.

"They're moving," the nurse said. "All of them. Twenty years a nurse, and I've never seen anything like it."

I knocked on my closet door three times.

Jody was already in my kitchen in her coat, because she'd been sleeping on our couch on Saturdays since the court.

"I'm coming," she said, before I could open my mouth.

"I didn't say anything."

"You had a face."

The closet opened on the lawn in the snow.

The white house wasn't lit anymore.

Half the windows were dark. The fountain was dry and full of leaves.
