Chapter 15: Why He Stayed Quiet
By seven the next morning I had a headline on my laptop.
It said, "The Thief Behind the January Story."
Dottie read it over my shoulder in the Gazette office, eating a granola bar with great calm.
"That's strong," she said.
"It's true."
"It's strong and true. I like it. Who's the thief?"
"Brock Sandvik."
She stopped chewing.
I told her everything, from the straight R to the trophy case alcove.
It took ninety seconds, and I kept my hands flat on the desk so they would stop shaking.
When I finished, Dottie set down the granola bar and said a word I will not print in a school paper.
"Print it today," she said. "I'll carry the stacks."
"That's what I'm going to do."
"Good."
"I'll lay it out this morning and run it at lunch."
The door opened.
Rhett stood in it with a gym bag on his shoulder.
He had the tired look of a boy who had not slept.
"Don't," he said.
"You have no idea what I'm about to say."
"You're about to run it."
