Chapter 2: Wrong Captain

Rhett Kolstad won't forward the photo, but the principal makes the two enemies co-chairs and he vows to find the sender.

I did not sleep.

At two in the morning I typed, "Sorry, wrong number," and deleted it.

At three I typed, "Please forget this," and deleted that too.

At four I wrote, "I am a ghost," and put the phone in a sock drawer.

At six the phone buzzed inside the drawer, and I dug it out.

It was Rhett Kolstad again.

"Still there?"

I stared at it.

The fake number worked for thirty days, and until I closed the app he could text me whenever he liked.

I typed, "Who is this?" as if I did not know.

"You first," he wrote. "You sent me a picture at eleven last night."

My whole body went cold.

"It was a mistake," I wrote. "I meant to send it to someone else."

"I figured. You said Brock."

"Please delete it."

The dots appeared, vanished, and appeared again.

"Already did," he wrote.

I sat very still.

"I deleted it this morning," he wrote. "I'm not showing it to anyone. I'm not that guy."

I wanted to believe him, and I did not.

This was the boy who had glared at me across the cafeteria for nine months.

"Why should I trust you?" I typed.

"You shouldn't. You don't know who I am."

That made me want to laugh, because I knew exactly who he was.

He was the captain of the hockey team, and he had never once said good morning to me.

"Okay," I wrote. "Thank you."

"Who is it for? Brock?"

I hesitated.

"Yes."

"He read your note out loud yesterday."

My throat tightened.

"He was wrong to do that," Rhett wrote. "I told him so. He thought it was funny."

I read that twice.

I did not know why the boy I disliked most was telling Brock off for me.

"Why are you being nice?" I typed.

There was a long pause.

"Tell me your name," he wrote.

"No."

"Then tell me one true thing."

I looked at the ceiling.

"I proofread everything," I wrote. "Except last night."

I switched the phone off and went to wash my face.

On Monday morning the principal called me out of first period.

I went down the hall with my stomach still twisted from the weekend.

She was waiting in her office with a mug that said World's Okayest Principal, and she was not alone.

Rhett Kolstad stood by the window in his team jacket with his hands in his pockets.

He looked rested, and tall, and irritated.

"Sit down, Anja," the principal said. "You two know each other."

"We've met," Rhett said.

"He wrote a three-page letter to my mother about me in February," I said. "She framed it."

"It was one page," said Rhett.

"It was front and back."

The principal pressed two fingers to her forehead.

"The Frostbite Classic is five weeks from Saturday," she said. "The children's hospital is counting on us.

It needs a student chair from the team and a student chair from the paper, and I cannot find two people who will work together."

"I'll do it alone," said Rhett.

"I'll do it alone," I said at the same time.

"Wonderful," said the principal. "You've both volunteered. Co-chairs."

"No," we both said.

"Yes." She handed us each a folder. "Meet after school."

In the hallway Rhett stopped beside the water fountain.

I tried to walk past him.

"Lindahl," he said.

He never used my first name, and I kept walking.

"Hey. Gazette."

I stopped, because it was the name the team used for me, and it was not a nice one.

He leaned against the wall and looked at me.

"Did you get a weird message this weekend?" he asked.

I thought my knees might give out.

"What?"

"Somebody sent me something meant for Brock." He held up his phone without showing me the screen. "Anonymous. I've been thinking about it."

"That sounds terrible," I said.

"It wasn't terrible."

He kept his eyes on mine. "That's the problem. She was clearly having a bad day, and someone's going to figure out who she is."

I couldn't breathe.

"I'm going to find her first," Rhett said. "I want to tell her Brock isn't worth it."

He pushed off the wall and walked away.

I stood there with the folder pressed against my chest.

He did not know it was me.

I told myself that all the way to second period.
