Chapter 19: Father
I read the whole book by lantern light, all the way to the palace water stairs.
Eleven years of orders.
Forty pounds of copper every quarter, sometimes sixty.
Twelve sacks of sloe leaf, sometimes twenty.
The first order was the spring before the King's tea started tasting bright.
Bertrand held out his hand for it at the top of the stairs.
Then he took his hand back.
"Not tonight," he said.
"Why not?"
"Because I'm your groom, and that book breaks my contract. If I take it from you in the dark, my cousin will say I forged it."
"Then when?"
"Council sits the day after tomorrow, at nine. Bring it to the table yourself, in front of all of them."
"And until then?"
"Until then," said Bertrand, "don't let it out of your sight."
I didn't.
I slept with it under the mattress, in Blanche's bed, with the connecting door locked.
In the morning I took it to the kitchen yard under my apron and poured tea all day with it pressed against my stomach.
