Chapter 4: Terms

We talked through the gate, because I wasn't letting Gerald back on my lawn.

Gerald lay down on the sidewalk with his chin on his paws.

Truffle came to the fence and pushed his nose between two pickets, and Gerald thumped his tail at him.

"Get back," I told Truffle.

Truffle did not get back.

"Five months ago, Camille and I split up," Silvan said. "We bought Gerald together as a puppy."

"I know. You told me in the parking lot."

"I didn't tell you the clause."

"What clause?"

"In the breakup agreement."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"If Gerald is ever reported or recorded as aggressive toward a person or an animal, he goes back to her."

I waited for him to say it was a joke.

"You signed that?"

"I signed it so she would leave faster. My lawyer fell asleep in the meeting."

He turned to me.

"And I'm telling you, Lacey, he is the gentlest dog alive."

"He had my dog on his back in front of six people."

"That is the one thing he's ever done."

"So the vet bill is a weapon."

"Your vet note says play posture. Your statement says he stood over him. That's good for me."

He looked at me.

"She wants the word attacked."

"She wanted me to sign it. I crossed it out three times."

"I know. I'm so grateful. And I'm terrified, because you also won't take the money."
