Chapter 14: Return Fee
She read all fourteen lines standing up in the back room of green books, with the door shut and one lamp lit.
Each line held a name, a city, a date and a fee.
The cities were written in scripts she could not read, and the only one she knew was Ueno.
Every fee was three thousand crowns, and every line ended in Seleth's sloping signature.
In the margin, in her grandmother's neat hand, ran a second column.
"Stayed. Died in Ashmere, the seventh year."
"Stayed. Died in Ashmere, the second winter."
"Stayed. Left no word."
Her pencil had stopped on the page without her noticing.
"Forty-two thousand crowns," she said.
Dravan stood against the door with his bandaged hand tucked into his coat.
"For a circle that never worked," he said.
"For a line that stops a hand's width short. He took the fee from fourteen auditors, and sent fourteen people nowhere."
"And me," said Nanami. "Tonight, in the courtyard. I'd have been the fifteenth."
Her voice cracked on the last word, and she shut the ledger very carefully.
Her hands shook so badly that the pencil rattled against the table.
